How to Qualify for the Oregon Statewide Spelling Championship

Picture

Qualification Rules:

The Contestants will be representatives of grades 1-5 (Division I); grades 6-8 (Division II); and grades 9–12 (Division III).  Grade level means the grade completed before the state contest.

The OREGON STATEWIDE SPELLING CHAMPIONSHIP is open to winners of Oregon school spelling contests as follows:

REGIONAL CONTEST:  Each COUNTY participating in a REGIONAL Contest may send ONE winner from EACH Division (unless there is a tie for 1st place, then both winners may attend).  If 1st place winners are unable to attend, 2nd place spellers will be invited to attend in their place.

COUNTY CONTEST:  Each County may send ONE winner from EACH Division (unless there is a tie for 1st place, then both winners may attend).   If 1st place winners are unable to attend, 2nd place spellers will be invited to attend in their place.

Qualification Procedure for Unaffiliated Students

Oregon Spellers will provide an alternate procedure to allow students to qualify for the OREGON STATEWIDE SPELLING CHAMPIONSHIP in situations where it is not possible for a student to participate in local contests.  Reasons a student might not be able to participate in local spelling contests may include:

  1. A County Coordinator does not wish to include an unaffiliated student in local contests.
  1. A student wishes to participate and is from a county that is not holding a County Contest.
  2. A student wishes to participate and is from a district that is not holding a District Contest and has been prohibited from participating in a County Contest by the County Coordinator due to the lack of the district’s participation.
  3. A student wishes to participate and is from a school that is not holding a School Contest and has been prohibited from participating in a District and/or County contest by the District and/or County Coordinator due to lack of the school’s participation.

Other “special” situations as reviewed by Oregon Spellers on a case-by-case basis (illness, unavailability for local contests that cannot be rectified at the local level, etc.).

Homeschooled and/or web-based students should contact their local County Coordinator to inquire if they can participate in local (School/District/County/Regional) contests.

County Coordinators are encouraged by Oregon Spellers to allow these “unaffiliated” students to participate in local contests if possible.
